Last month, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) dropped its efforts to implement the CLASS Act. The CLASS program is a national, voluntary insurance program that was supposed to be available after October 2012 to help pay for services and supports that help citizens maintain independence in the community.

WA State plans to limit ED visits for Medicaid patients for non-emergencies. The core of the debate right now is to define what is an emergency and what is not and for what type of patients. With the new plan, they can go to the ED only 3 times per year for non-emergencies and they would be notified about it.

To start, this is the first time we have had a national report that reflects on the effectiveness of care coordination which affects readmissions. To quickly summarize the report, there was little progress in reducing readmission rates over the five-year period 2004 to 2009 and for some conditions, the readmissions rates have actually increased nationwide.

Even today, when I talk to healthcare executives, some of them are not clear about Meaningful Use and its definition and criteria. With Stage 1 currently in progress and Stage 2 criteria being defined, I felt like dwelling deep in to what Meaningful Use is all about and explain in detail what the different criteria means and ultimately discuss what all this means to the patient. I have accumulated information from a variety of sources and consolidating into my blog to provide explanations that is easy to understand.
