Data Center Migration and Core Modernization for a Leading Mining Company
Our client, one of the leading mining companies, had their data center located in Australia and was in the process of moving its data center to Malaysia. The client’s existing operating systems and databases were outdated and out of support. Moreover, there were numerous unused and underutilized servers, which needed to be decommissioned and migrated to a central location. An extensive audit of the client’s current infrastructure also highlighted presence of a single point of failure and lack of disaster recovery.
Backups were not reliable, systems and applications were not maintained, and security best practices were not implemented. Some of the ramifications of the existing infrastructure were:
- Low availability
- No fault tolerance
- Outdated end point patching
- Lack of documentation
Each month of delay resulted in several hundred thousand dollars in direct costs. Faced with these challenges the client reached out to iLink to carry out the data center migration, set up a robust security infrastructure, and application / core modernization.
To kick off the engagement, iLink’s team of experts conducted a workshop with key stakeholders in the company to understand the impact of this initiative on business operations. iLink worked with the client’s IT team to devise a phased plan that would enable the client to focus on their business with minimal disruption to everyday operations.
The migration of the workloads, servers, and applications to Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) in Malaysia and to O365 was completed in 6 months. Post migration, a complete QA of all servers and application was conducted to ensure alignment with business expectations.
iLink successfully migrated the data, servers, and applications. In addition, we performed a complete cleanup, optimized resources, upgraded to latest cloud and infrastructure. The client was impressed by our ability to meet their tight deadlines and produce high quality outcomes.
We decommissioned 55% of unused servers with zero downtime and saved several thousand dollars in recurring cost for the client. The client was not only able to realize huge productivity gains but also achieved higher security standards.
